The bug's speech is
zero-dimensional; that is, each character of its language has no dimension
that could be measured. When you have a typical theoretical dot or point, it
can either exist or not, but you couldn't tell me, say, how wide it is.
"Wide" doesn't mean anything when you talk about points.
By the same token, the bird's speech is made up of lines, which are
one-dimensional. A one-dimensional object has one thing about it that can be
measured, but no more than that. Lines can be "long", but not both "long" &
"high". The bird is a higher form of life than the bug, so it's words have
one more dimension than does the insect. Starting to see the pattern?
Now we come to the humans and Snoopy, who, granted, is the exception to this
pattern that i'm seeking to reveal. (But then, anyone who knows PEANUTS in
the least will testify that Snoopy is almost always the exception to almost
any pattern one can think of.) The human words are two-dimensions; not only
can they be both long and wide, but they can also contain within themselves
both lines and points, which definitely makes them exponentially more
interesting than just plain ol' lines.
Now, to extrapolate with fear and trepidation, imagine a being whose speech
could only be represented by three-dimensional objects; no letters writable
on paper would be sufficient to communicate the height, width and depth of
what this being might have to say. You don't have to imagine: just read 1
Kings 19:5-8 for an example of one.
And who's to stop us from thinking about a being whose speech could only be
represented to observers as four-dimensional objects (height, width, depth,
and time)? [see Genesis 1:24] What about one who has a five-dimensional
language? (the previously mentioned four + what one might call "spirit")
[Check out Genesis 1:26-27] In this extrapolation, we need not stop at
anything short of a being who could speak a language of infinite dimensions.
And why should we, when it's all true! [See John 1:1-18 for a description of
the Word of infinite dimensions]
So, say you are a word spoken from the mouth of God. What are you going to
do about it? Why, seek to be a metaphor which describes Him who spoke you
into being, of course! Modify yourself! Be an action verb! You get the idea. |

A few days after i read this
particular PEANUTS strip, something clicked in my head and i realized an
entirely different perspective on human existence. (to me, anyway )
Follow closely, philosophy fans, for i am about to do what i can, so that
you can see what i can see from here.
The thing that strikes me about this strip is that Charles Schulz represents
the speech of the bug as dots or points. Now, look at the strip below, which
demonstrates yer typical bird-talk coming from Schulz's Woodstock: |
|
And then of course, there is
the human words which we all know & love, which are used by all the other
characters in the strip. Okay, now, does anyone notice a pattern? Here's a
hint: the pattern is mathematical, or to be more precise, geometrical.
(Whoa, now don't you go anywhere at the mention of the "m-word", English
majors, your part is coming soon, so stick with me.) |
